Discover a different side of yoga
Mudgar Yoga is a unique practice combining traditional Hatha Yoga with India’s ancestral strength-training traditions.Named after the mudgar, a traditional Indian weighted club, this dynamic practice brings together yoga postures, functional bodyweight exercises, strength training, breathwork and mobility. We explore traditional Indian training methods using the mudgar alongside the gada (mace), lighter Indian clubs and shenā push-up boards.Rather than separating strength from yoga, Mudgar Yoga brings the two together into a complete practice designed to develop a body that is strong, mobile, coordinated and resilient.

Ancient Indian Strength Training
Long before modern gyms and fitness equipment, India developed its own rich traditions of physical training. In traditional training environments such as akharas, strength, endurance, mobility and discipline were cultivated through bodyweight exercises and distinctive training tools. Mudgar Yoga takes inspiration from these traditions while integrating them into a yoga practice accessible to modern practitioners. The focus is not simply on lifting heavier weights. We work with controlled movements, coordination, mobility and breath to develop functional strength that can be applied both on and off the yoga mat.

A Perfect Complement to Ashtanga Yoga
Mudgar Yoga is particularly beneficial for practitioners of Ashtanga Yoga and other dynamic styles of yoga. Ashtanga requires much more than flexibility. Repeated Chaturangas, transitions, arm balances and seated lifts demand considerable upper-body and core strength. Mudgar Yoga helps develop these qualities through targeted strength and bodyweight training. We work specifically on building stronger and more controlled Chaturangas and push-ups, while developing the core and upper-body strength required for postures such as Nāvāsana, Kākāsana and Utpluthiḥ. The practice can therefore be a great preparation for Ashtanga Yoga, helping you approach demanding postures and transitions with greater stability, control and confidence.
Strength AND Mobility
Being strong is only one part of the practice. Traditional Indian club and mace movements involve large, controlled ranges of motion, making Mudgar Yoga particularly interesting for developing mobility alongside strength. Special attention is given to the shoulders. The circular and rotational movements explored during the practice can help develop greater shoulder mobility, coordination and control while strengthening the muscles that support the shoulder joint. We also work on mobility of the wrists, spine and hips, creating a practice in which strength and freedom of movement develop together.
Inspired by Hanuman
The spirit of the practice is inspired by Hanuman, one of the great symbols of strength in the Indian tradition. Hanuman represents much more than physical power. His stories embody courage, discipline, humility, devotion and service. These qualities remind us that strength in yoga is not about competition or ego. We cultivate a strong body while maintaining awareness, control and respect for our individual limits. Mudgar Yoga is therefore much more than a workout: it is an exploration of strength through the wider philosophy and traditions of yoga.
